The study and research surrounding biomaterials and their application in the modern world has been of great interest by many different industries and companies. Biomaterials are designed to be able to work along with bodily and organ systems, in order to provide medical treatment or act for a therapeutic purpose. Examples include artificial joins and stents. Making it a unique area of study, the development of biomaterials encompasses and practices many different elements of science including that of Medicine, Biology, Chemistry and Engineering.

Furthermore, Biomaterials design is essential for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In this talk, Professor Gautrot will be covering:

The role of biomaterials design to control the behaviour of stem cells used in regenerative medicine, from tissue engineering to the development of the next generation of in vitro models known as "organ-on-chip" technologies

What stem cells are and how they respond to biomaterials,
-
How the properties of biomaterials can be tuned to control stem cell performance to promote tissue regeneration
-
The use of microfabrication to engineer organ-on-chips, displaying comparable structure and function to those of native tissues.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
The talk will be hosted by Dr Julien Gautrot, Professor of Biomaterials and Biointerfaces at Queens Mary University London in the School of Engineering and Materials Science. He obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester, and then focused on biomaterials science as a PDRA, first at Universite de Montreal, Canada, then at the University of Cambridge, UK. Co-authoring more than 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals, he has attracted grants totalling £4 million.
